Vienna in the 1780s: the city is buzzing 24/7 with music, concerts, fairs, operas, balls, and open-air entertainment. Mozart is right in the thick of it. Those who can afford it hire a live band, a so-called “harmony band,” for their evening festivities. These bands consisted of an alternating ensemble of wind instruments. Emperor Joseph II maintained his own harmony music at court. The nobility followed suit, and so it went, down the social classes to the unemployed street musicians, who got together and offered their services as harmony bands to passersby. And Mozart? Straight away, he breaks the boundaries of the genre. The Serenade KV 361 lasts almost an hour, and its seven movements not only offer compositional craftsmanship of the highest order, but also an emotional rollercoaster ride like no other: beautiful enough to make you cry, funny enough that you fall over, and everything in between. No wonder that Peter Shaffer, for his play “Amadeus,” selected a passage specifically from this work, which left his rival Antonio Salieri marvelling at “the voice of God.”
Mozart composed this work for 13 instruments, including basset horns, which were brand new at the time. He would continue to use them, also in his Requiem.
The L’Orfeo Bläserensemble – the wind ensemble formed from the prominent Austrian Baroque orchestra of the same name – plays on original or replica instruments from Mozart’s time. A sound that embraces the world.
