CONCERT INTRODUCTION
Una Nowak, reading texts of José Luis Borges, among others
“Diving into the ocean of pockets of an old coat, searching for hope. Perhaps you’ll find a tattered banknote and be welcome in the old bar.” … “I have kept past kisses in a bottle. I carry them close to my heart...” Tango is just as much poetry as it is dance, as much text as it is music. This evening focuses on the narrative, chamber music aspect, without the music losing any of the fiery drama so characteristic of tango. Heart-wrenchingly beautiful scenes are described, or ones of great sadness. But before they tip over into camp, a healthy dose of bitter irony keeps the poetry in balance.
Alejandro Guyot lives and works in his hometown of Buenos Aires. He rose to fame in the late 1990s with the ensemble 34 Puñaladas, later known as Bombay Buenos Aires. In 2021, he released the solo album “La Guerra es Adentro” and published the novel “Sangre,” a comedia negra. At the Opera National du Rhin, he appeared in Piazzolla’s “Maria de Buenos Aires” in the role of the ghost El Duende. In Buenos Aires, he teaches a canto tango class at the conservatory.
Elbi Olalla, who lives in Barcelona since 2019, comes from the western Argentine city of Mendoza, which had a rich, distinctive tango scene. Since the turn of the millennium, Olalla has breathed new life into this scene with the band Altertango, along with festivals and innovative workshop projects.
