Company of Music & Waed Bouhassoun Those who sow with tears

With music from times of war and catastrophes the Company of Music and the Syrian musician Waed Bouhassoun cannot explain unfathomable events, but they send signs of love and hope in the doubt and pain. In the first years of the Thirty Years’ War the Leipzig Thomas Cantor Johann Hermann Schein composed motets based on texts from the Old Testament which turned suffering into happiness: “Those who sow with tears shall reap in songs of joy .” With his work “Schweigen” (Silence) the Austrian composer Georg Friedrich Haas reflects upon the recent catastrophes of Lampedusa and Fukushima and upon the atrocities of the SS regime in southern Austria. In her songs the Syrian singer and oud player Waed Bouhassoun aims to express her identity, her roots, and her love, but also the pain of her country, which has been suffering and is being destroyed since years.
