The German consort ORLANDOviols performs music of the spheres on old gambas in combination with electronic sound techniques. The universe becomes tangible as a harmonic space where the orbits of the sun, moon, and planets run their courses in melodies and rhythms. ORLANDOviols translate the cosmic harmonies acoustically and visually. The audience is surrounded by 15 loudspeakers, which project the electronically live processed sound of the gambas into the space. The sound inputs of the five gamba players trace the movement of the planets. Each voice is assigned a particular colour, which generates dynamic coloured light patterns from the musical structures. The cosmos is surveyed by English Renaissance music in 5/2 measure according to the relationship between the five planets and the sun and the moon. Along with music from more recent times, chaos to order is spanned in five intervals in John Cage’s “Five”, and in Steve Reich’s “Violin Phase” melodic shifts move in the orbit of a moon phase.
