Imago Dei 2021 opens with the voices of one of the most important European choirs: Jauna Muzika from Lithuania. For over three decades now, the choir has been enriching the world of vocal music with exceptional works and a unique, radiant sound that has enthralled audiences from the Berlin Philharmonic Chamber Hall to the S. Rachmaninov Hall in Moscow, from the Fredric R. Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv to the Shanghai Opera House. In the framework of the Backlight programme in Krems, Jauna Muzika juxtaposes György Ligeti’s spherical 16-part mixed choir version of “Lux Aeterna” with ten Baltic musical visions of light. The choir adds shimmer to the tender harmonies in “Nunc dimittis” by the world-famous Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, illuminates the darkest corners of loneliness in “The Night is Darkening Round Me“ by Pärt’s compatriot Tõnu Kõrvits, and navigates between the poles of light and shadow in “Lumen”, a work the Lithuanian master of minimal music Rytis Mažulis, composed especially for Imago Dei.
