Spring Sacrifice

The world-class piano duo Ferhan and Ferzan Önder use their keys to conjure “The Rite of Spring” by Igor Stravinsky, a ballet and orchestral concert in which the Russian composer portrays a deadly pagan ritual and celebrates the resurrection of nature. “Winter Morning in Istanbul”, composed by the exiled Turk Fazıl Say upon the request of the Önder brothers, also deals with nature—namely, its struggle for survival against our proliferating civilisation. Dedicated to the victims of capitalist and racist US American society, George Gershwin’s opera “Porgy and Bess” about the ghetto fates of African Americans becomes a fantasy for two pianos with Ferhan and Ferzan Önder. The chorales of Johann Sebastian Bach sound like sacrifices, which the Hungarian composer György Kurtág transformed into prayers on piano for four hands.
