Vespers of the Blessed Virgin

A double jubilee at the opening of Imago Dei 2019: The festival for religious music now in its 20th edition and the Lower Austrian choir Ad Libitum, founded 25 years ago, celebrate with one of the greatest artworks of the Occident: Claudio Monteverdi’s “Vespers of the Blessed Virgin”. Its stylistic richness, from traditional polyphony to then modern concertante elements, will be in good hands with the Ad Libitum choir and the old music specialists of the instrumental ensemble Barucco. The original work title is complemented with the term “da concerto”, a hint that the “Vespers of the Blessed Virgin” represent a spiritual concert at the vesper service—a vesper image become sound. The concerti portray the salvific meaning of the Virgin Mary, from her election to the lamentation of her son, who devoted himself as a gift and sacrifice.
