Works by Galina Ustvolskaya and Johann Sebastian Bach

Texts by Anna Akhmatova, Daniil Charms, and others

For 70 of her 87 years Galina Ustvolskaya lived in the atheist Soviet Union, composing in seclusion. In her religiously inspired compositions, from which an ensemble around the violinist Annelie Gahl will perform two symphonies and a duet, she never left her path of “truthfulness”. Reciter Alexander Nitzberg relates the brazen lamenti by Ustvolskaya with elegies by, amongst others, Anna Akhmatova, who became a lamenting prophet during the decades of persecution and repression in the Soviet Union. Light design by Sabine Maier, introduction by Rainer Lepuschitz.
