St. John Passion Johann Sebastian Bach (1675 - 1750)

Ich folge dir gleichfalls mit freudigen Schritten
Und lasse dich nicht, mein Leben, mein Licht.

Bach: St John Passion, Part 1, soprano aria

Absolute faith and unconditional following towards the Lord, who became man through Jesus Christ, sounds from the Passion as it used to be told in musical form in the churches of Baroque times on Good Friday. A soulful composer like Johann Sebastian Bach employed drastic means of expression in Leipzig, since a scenic performance was not possible and the dramatic happenings had to be transported through music alone. With the St John Passion Bach created a touching and vivid narration of Jesus’ way to the cross which, for this evangelist, is part of the godly plan. “Es ist vollbracht!” (“It is done!”) becomes the Son of God’s triumphant call, who, like his father, lives forever and is beyond earthly comprehension. God, the Lord, and Jesus, the Lord, are one and the same. The red, blue and yellow bruises on Jesus’ back—signs of violence—become an equivalent of the peaceful rainbow which the Godfather painted into the sky after the great flood. This music talks of the Lord’s compassion as well as the acknowledgement of his sovereignty which does not even diminish while he is being humiliated and nailed to the cross:

Herr, unser Herrscher, … zeig uns durch deine Passion, dass du, der wahre Gottessohn, … auch in der größten Niedrigkeit, verherrlicht worden bist.”
Bach: St John Passion, opening choir of version 1 and 3

Music generates solidarity with the Lord in the musicians and in the listeners, like it can hardly be generated otherwise. Bach’s credibility in the Minorite Church in Stein will be underlined by the chorus and the Cappella Musica Sacra from Krems whose passion music together with internationally known soloists and under the direction of Alfred Endelweber have become an “IMAGO DEI” tradition.

"Du hättest keine Macht über mich, wenn sie dir nicht wäre von oben herab gegeben …"
Bach: St John Passion, Part 2, Jesus recitative

When bassist Robert Holl will sing this in Stein, God, the Lord, will be very close.
